Terugblik op de conferentie ‘Architecture Quality as a Common Concern’

Van 26 tot 29 april 2024 organiseerden de Cellule architecture en het Team Vlaams Bouwmeester een Europese conferentie omtrent architectuurbeleid onder de titel ‘Architecture Quality as a Common Concern’. Reflecties en conclusies werden gebundeld in een online publicatie, die je nu kan downloaden.

In 2024 organiseerden de Cellule architecture van de Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles en het Team Vlaams Bouwmeester gezamenlijk een nieuwe editie van de European Conference on Architectural Policies (ECAP) ter gelegenheid van het Belgische voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie. De conferentie vond plaats van 23 tot 26 april 2024 in La Tricoterie in Brussel, met als titel ‘Architecture Quality as a Common Concern’. 

Onderzoek naar de interactie tussen publieke en private actoren 

De conferentie ging over de vraag hoe publieke opdrachtgevers en beleidsmakers kunnen samenwerken met de ruime waaier aan spelers, met name particuliere ontwikkelaars, ontwerpers en, a fortiori, het grote publiek: hoe kan architectuurkwaliteit een centrale plaats krijgen in deze interacties? 

Focus op discussie 

Gedurende vier dagen konden deelnemers uit alle sectoren ideeën uitwisselen tijdens lezingen, tijdens projectbezoeken en vooral in thematische workshops. In tegenstelling tot wat gebruikelijk is, bestond het evenement Brussel 2024 niet alleen uit een plenaire conferentie, maar ook uit een reeks rondetafelgesprekken in kleine groepen. Aan de hand van specifieke casestudy’s werden de deelnemers uitgenodigd om actief in gesprek te gaan. De workshops werden geleid door CityTools en de onderzoeksgroep Architectuurcultuur en de hedendaagse conditie (ACC) van de Universiteit Gent, die samen de discussies voorbereidden en de rondetafelgesprekken leidden. 

Traditiegetrouw vonden in het kielzog van de ECAP ook de vergadering van de European Directors on Architectural Policies (EDAP) en de bijeenkomst van de New European Bauhaus National Contact Points plaats. 

Een publicatie 

Het Team Vlaams Bouwmeester en de Cellule architecture hebben deze uitwisselingen gedocumenteerd en een aantal bevindingen gebundeld in een online publicatie. Zonder een exhaustief verslag te willen bieden, brengen we ter afronding van deze zeer vruchtbare samenwerking een selectieve neerslag, die hopelijk toekomstige organisatoren van soortgelijk overleg zal inspireren. De publicatie verschijnt in drie afzonderlijke taalversies (Nederlands, Frans en Engels).

In 2024, the Architecture Unit of the Brussels-Wallonia Federation and the Flemish Government Architect Team jointly organised a new edition of the European Conference on Architectural Policies (ECAP) during the Belgian Presidency.  Entitled „Architectural quality as a common concern”, this event was held from 23 to 26 April 2024 at La Tricoterie in Brussels.  

Examining the interaction between public and private actors  

The aim of the conference was to explore the ways in which public-sector project leaders can interact with the players involved, particularly private developers, designers, and citizens: how can the notion of architectural quality be central to these interactions?  

Focus on discussion  

For four days, participants from all sectors were able to exchange ideas through lectures, project visits and, above all, thematic workshops. Indeed, contrary to traditional arrangements, the Brussels 2024 event did not only take the form of plenary sessions but also involved a series of roundtables organised in small groups. Taking specific case studies as a starting point, participants were invited to actively contribute to the discussions. CityTools office and the research group Architecture Culture and the Contemporary (ACC) at Ghent University prepared the roundtables and held a series of fruitful discussions.  

In keeping with tradition, the ECAP also hosted the European Directors on Architectural Policies (EDAP) meeting and the meeting of the New European Bauhaus National Contact Points.  

A publication  

The Flemish Government Architect Team and the Architecture Unit have issued a publication to document these exchanges. Rather than an exhaustive account, the purpose here is to compile some testimonies from the event in a selective recap of a fruitful collaboration, which hopefully will inspire future organisers of similar meetings. The publication comes in three separate language versions (English, Dutch and French).
