As one of Belgium's top 5 for tourist overnight accommodation, the town of Lommel wants to expand its offering to a target audience of "young-at-heart" and "sport enthusiasts" by building a new youth hostel. The youth hostel in Lommel will be located in the area of the Soeverein top events hall, located in Sportveldenstraat, which is the town's recreational and sports district. The town aims to offer young people every amenity (swimming pool, sports centre, youth clubs, playground, skate park, horse-riding centre, etc.) in the vicinity of the Sahara nature area and the Centerparks recreation area. The stop for the bus and call-up bus service is nearby and there is a starting point for cyclists (bike entry point), walkers, mountain-bikers and horse-riders. The location of the youth hostel fits into this setting.

The design for the future building has to ensure there is a perfect link with the natural surroundings and the development within the environment (between the sports infrastructure and the villas).

The new youth hostel to be designed must be suitable for approximately residential guests to be given accommodation in rooms for 1, 2 and 4 people. Each room has its own facilities. The building must meet the standards in place for access for people with a handicap. The other communal areas need to include meeting and reception rooms, restaurant with facilities for heating food, bar, lounge and Internet corner. Utility areas include the manager's quarters, plenty of storage, bicycle shed, changing room/staff area, restrooms, luggage storage. A spacious public reception area must also be an attraction for non-residents, with an additional area for providing information. There also needs to be space for staging events and activities that promote cultural exchange.

The style needs to be sturdy and sober, but especially has a freshness that is attractive and pleasant for young people and is equipped with modern security measures for guests and their possessions. The use of sustainable materials and energy-saving technologies is desirable.
