Call to designers

The Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) and the Team Vlaams Bouwmeester publish an extra project Open Call 41 for the phased repurposing and design of the Sint-Hubertuskerk (Church of St Hubert) in Berchem, Antwerp. The application period for this project runs until Friday 23 April 2021, 11am.

The Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) will take a long lease on the Sint-Hubertus church in Antwerp for the next 49 years. The VAi is responsible for the maintenance and an appropriate reallocation. St Hubert’s will thus be given a new purpose and will house the collection of architectural archives, a library and offices. The church will once again have an important public function with space for coworking, multi-purpose rooms and a coffee or soup bar.

The VAi is appealing to the Open Call for the appointment of a design team. A multidisciplinary team is being sought that can realise an innovative and respectful reallocation of the existing building within the proposed construction budget. The team must have experience with architectural heritage and building archaeological research, including the valuation of the interior.

The project was originally to be part of Open Call 41. The timing of the public procedure for the granting of the lease and the publication of Open Call 41 overlapped. Therefore, the project for the reallocation of the Saint-Hubertus Church is published as ‘Open call 41bis’ and subsequently added to the list of projects of Open call 41.

The application for this project proceeds in the same way as previous applications to Open Oproep, via the website www.vlaamsbouwmeester.be.
