Gent - University College Ghent – Schoonmeersen campus 2

Project description
Because of important modifications in the programme and a thorough reorganisation of the ‘Hogeschool Ghent’ this project was cancelled in consultation with the client. This project together with project 1901 was published again in Open Call 21 as project 2113.
University College Ghent, which forms part of the Ghent University Association and has branches in Ghent, Melle and Aalst, has a masterplan which comprises a series of infrastructure interventions aimed at improving the efficiency, functioning and quality of the education, research and service provision on offer. In addition, the University College also has a masterplan for the spatial and sustainable development of the Schoonmeersen 1 and 2 campuses.
One of these interventions will take place on the Schoonmeersen 2 campus at Voskenslaan 362 in Ghent. This residential and recreational campus has an extremely strategic location close to the Schoonmeersen 1 campus, where all the teaching and research buildings are located. The two campuses are connected by a cycle-path and footpath without using any public roads. Sovoreg, University College Ghent’s organisation for student facilities, wishes to build a new building on this campus which has space for a student residence with 400 rooms, an Erasmus hotel (for short-stay foreign students) with 120 rooms, new administrative offices for Sovoreg and a student restaurant for 150 people.
The client is seeking architecture in which functionality and design are in equilibrium. The building must be logically and flexibly constructed and take into account the applicable regulations concerning student residences and from a technical perspective fulfil the requirements with regard to accessibility, safety, comfort and sustainability. The client has particularly clear-cut aims in the area of sustainability. It expects a low-energy building with the installation of low levels of energy and water flow. This implies the need for a thorough investigation into the use of green energy sources. On the other hand, for the client this also means maximum control over running costs and a low-maintenance building.
These functional requirements should be translated into a contemporary design which fits in with its surroundings. The building must radiate a prestigious identity yet at the same time also be a place where students can feel at home.
In order to make this an integrated project, the University College also wants to have a design study made for the layout of the grounds at the Schoonmeersen 2 campus. The client reserves the right to award the further finalisation of the design at a later date.
Fee for architecture: min. 6%, max. 8% (including stability and technical installations)
Fee for layout of grounds: KVIV standard / Scale I / class 2, lower limit KVIV -2% and upper limit KVIV
