Project description

The building of a slow-traffic bridge between the south side of Stationsplein and the north side of Elzenhof park creates a short, functional link for pedestrians and cyclists between the Elzenhof and the town. The slow-traffic bridge takes the Elzenhof out of its isolation and breaks down the barrier created by the railway line. The bridge also creates continuity both the pedestrian and cycling routes between the heart of the town and the industrial area. Finally, the bridge will play an important additional role in the future in opening up the platforms through sections of stairs built on the bridge.

The slow-traffic bridge is designed to act as a landmark and give identity to the area round the station. On the western side, the bridge comes out on the green hill that acts as a landmark between Elzenhof park and the parking area to the west of the railway line.

The bridge will be built as a relatively narrow structure in order to stress its identity as a slow-traffic route and to accentuate the lightness of the bridge. The landing of the bridge on both sides of the tracks will be built with an acceptable angle of incline. The bridge needs to be as low over the tracks as possible so that cyclists have to negotiate as small a height difference as possible. In the area above the tracks, a junction in the overhead wire pylons needs to be avoided, otherwise this will result in the bridge having to be higher.
