Project description

The school belongs to Flemish Community Education school group 8 and consists of a primary and secondary school housed together in a freestanding modernist building. Also on the site is a more recent, separate building which houses the pre-school section and the day nursery. This school has a distinctly urban location on a site between Klein-Berchemstraat, Kasteellaan and Basilieklaan.

The existing building has aged, the outer walls are suffering from concrete rot, the staircases are unstable, the sanitary facilities are inadequate and the building as a whole does not meet today’s educational requirements. At the same time, the school population is growing rapidly in both primary and secondary education. In view of the current school population, it is impossible to find more temporary accommodation outside the school. A feasibility study has shown that the building can be stripped and renovated in phases. Partial demolition and a new replacement building is also a possibility. A number of temporary buildings can be erected on the campus, each of which will be able to accommodate a share of the pupils.

The existing buildings have a gross surface area of around 10,000 sq. m. Flemish Community Education wants not just to optimise the use of this school, but possibly also expand it. After all, there is a need for additional classrooms. A feasibility study/masterplan revealed that in budgetary terms renovation would be more realistic than a new building. The masterplan also examined the possibilities for a sports hall and as a result the necessary land area was increased to 13,507 sq. m.

The design must take into account the various needs of the primary and secondary schools and the need for them to have their own place in the building and on the site. On the other hand, a maximum effort must be made to ensure synergy and the joint use of certain spaces.

The client wants a complete project, whereby the necessary sports infrastructure is included on the site. The possibilities of after-school use and the separate phasing of this sports component are important aspects of the project.

Please note: In their statement of motivation for each model project for which they apply three candidates must list reference projects from their portfolio. The following information must be supplied with respect to these reference projects: the client, a description and the cost price of the services and the estimated cost price of the completed project.
