The temporary partnership bob mcmaster architects with krft will realise the new large hall with 400 seats at the cultural site De Woeker in Oudenaarde. With this extension, the current small hall, the meeting and rehearsal rooms in the old fire station and the old municipal school will be revalued and merged into an attractive cultural site. The protected cityscape will gain a crowning glory.

Amsterdam architect duo Oscar Vos and Thomas Dieben and the architectural team of Bob De Wispelaere and Sarah McMaster worked out the concept together on the theme of 'entre cour et jardin'. They manage to create a wonderful synthesis of all the programme requirements and nice-to-haves in a compact unit that leaves plenty of open space on the Liedtspark side.

Old and new are firmly coupled, and this brings nothing but benefits: the connecting corridors are merged by their special structure into a pleasant walking foyer, the new hall towers modestly yet visibly above the cityscape, old is energetically upgraded by new, the façade cladding of the new hall embraces the existing hall, and last but not least: the compact shape of the attractive new hall is entirely focused on speech intelligibility.

Between the fire station and the school, you enter the renewed site via a pleasant forecourt, with the theatre café in the old barracks. At the back, the parking demand has been met in a future-oriented way. The design of the parking area suggests a cultural use and invites a review of its current function.
